Basketball · Law 43: Special Situations · Insporta Book (https://book.insporta.app/basketball/laws/law-43-special-situations/)

Several infractions in one stopped-clock period: charging, ordering and cancelling penalties, technicals first, and how the game restarts.

## 43.431 Cancelling Penalties

The procedure, equal penalties and what is left.

### Test 1: Charge, order, cancel

- Special situations arise when additional infractions are committed in the same game-clock-stopped period after an infraction. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.1)
- All fouls are charged and all penalties identified, then the order of the infractions is determined. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.1)
- All equal penalties on the teams and all double-foul penalties are cancelled, in the order they were committed. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.3)
- Once entered and cancelled, those penalties are considered as never having occurred. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.3)
- All remaining penalties are administered in the order in which they were committed. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.7)
- Once the ball is live on the first free throw or the throw-in, that penalty cannot cancel any remaining ones. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.6)
- With no control or entitlement at the first infraction, a jump ball situation occurs. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.8)
- Charge, order, cancel equals, then administer the rest in order. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2)
- With nothing left to give, the team in control throws in nearest the first infraction. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.3, 43.2.8)
- Equal penalties cancel; Team A had the ball, so it throws in nearest the first infraction. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.8)

## 43.432 Order and Restart

Technicals first, the last possession, and the restart.

### Test 1: Technicals, possession and restarts

- A technical foul's penalty is administered first, whatever order was set and even if administration has begun. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.4)
- That technical is administered in the order the infractions occurred, unless cancelled. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.4)
- The right to possession in the last penalty administered cancels any earlier rights. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.5)
- Double fouls are wiped out alongside the equal penalties. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.3)
- After a goal or a last free throw, the non-scoring team throws in from behind its end line. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.8)
- Being owed the ball at the first infraction gives it back. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.8)
- Cancelling equals and giving the rest both go by when each happened. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.2-43.2.3, 43.2.7)
- A technical's penalty goes first; the rest follow in the order committed. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.4, 43.2.7)
- With nothing left to give after a goal, the non-scoring team inbounds from its end line. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.8)
- A technical's free throw goes first, even if it was called last. (Source: FIBA OBR 2026, Art. 43.2.4)
