Stroking and Stopping in Figure Skating (Level 2: Elementary) on Insporta: 20 sourced facts behind 2 tests. Covers: backward stroking and the t-stop.

Backward stroking, the T-stop, the hockey stop, the forward pivot and the order in which stops are learned.

## Test 1: Backward stroking and the T-stop

- Backward strokes come from a half swizzle: the weight goes onto one foot while the other pushes out on its inside edge. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- The pushing foot comes back down parallel to the other skate; the weight transfers and the other foot pushes. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- Backward stroking keeps the arms slightly forward and the head and chest up, in line with the hips. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- The back foot is set behind the gliding foot on its outside edge and pressed to skid. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- Whichever foot forms the top of the T behind, the same arm is held forward. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- Placing the back blade softly on its outside edge, right by the gliding foot, gives a clean skid instead of a catch. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- From a backward two-foot glide the weight shifts to one foot, balanced on its ball, with the other skate lifted to ankle height. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.6: Badge 6)
- A backward stroke is a half swizzle out, a lift in front of the skating foot, and a set-down parallel before the next push. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- From the T-position the skater pushes into a one-foot glide, places the back foot behind on its outside edge and presses it into a skid. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)
- In B one blade glides straight on while the other skids crosswise behind it, forming a T. A ends in a two-blade sideways skid, C fans out to one side, D keeps gliding. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.7: Badge 7)

## Test 2: The hockey stop and the order of stops

- The skater keeps the upper body facing ahead and turns both feet quickly about 90 degrees the same way. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
- Only the feet turn: the upper body keeps facing straight ahead while the blades shave the ice. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
- The skid comes from the inside edge of the forward skate and the outside edge of the rear one. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
- The harder the skater presses down, the quicker the shaving action stops the skate. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
- Begin the stop as a snowplow and then bring the back foot up to it, using its outside edge. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
- In a forward pivot one toe pick stays in the ice while the other foot pumps the skater round on an inside edge. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.6: Badge 6)
- Pumping with the free foot, the skater travels forward round the toe pick for one to one and a half revolutions. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.6: Badge 6)
- The snowplow stop comes in badge 4, the T-stop in badge 7 and the hockey stop in badge 10. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.4, 5.7, 5.10)
- From a two-foot glide the feet turn together while the body faces ahead, and pressing down makes the skid. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
- In A both lines end in a broad sideways skid, both blades turned across together. B ends in a T, C fans out from one blade, D keeps gliding. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021), 5.10: Badge 10)
