Spin Positions in Figure Skating (Level 4: Intermediate) on Insporta: 20 sourced facts behind 2 tests. Covers: spin names and codes.

Spin names and codes, the basic positions and their variations.

## Test 1: Spin names and codes

- A scratch spin turns on the lower toe pick and the bit of blade just behind it, which scratches the ice. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021))
- A back spin, or reverse spin, is any one-foot spin that a counterclockwise spinner turns on the right foot. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021))
- A leading C means a change of foot: CSSp is a change-foot sit spin. A combination is written Co, a camel C before Sp. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27; Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021))
- F stands for flying: the spin starts with a jump. FCSp is a flying camel spin, FSSp a flying sit spin. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27; Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021))
- Co marks a combination and the leading C a change of foot. CCSp is a change-foot camel, FCoSp a flying combination with no change. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- LSp is the layback spin; USp is upright, SSp sit and CSp camel. (Source: Special Olympics Figure Skating Coaching Guide (2021))
- The name of a flying spin follows its landing position; the flying position in the air may differ from it. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- The code reads FCSSp: flying first, then the change of foot, then the position and Sp. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- FCCoSp reads flying change-foot combination spin, the letters taken from left to right. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- C, FCCSp, joins F (flying), C (change of foot) and CSp (camel). A is a flying camel with no change, B a change camel with no fly, D a change combination. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)

## Test 2: Positions and variations

- Camel forward, sideways and upward differ in the shoulder line: parallel to the ice, turned to vertical, or past vertical. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- Upward is the most twisted group: the shoulders turn beyond the vertical while the free leg stays in the camel. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- The three difficult upright groups follow the torso: leaning forward, straight up or sideways, or in the Biellmann position. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- The free foot is pulled up from behind, higher than and towards the top of the head, close to the spinning axis. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- In a headless variation the head and neck move back from the main axis of the body core, which upsets the balance. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- A simple variation moves a body part without upsetting the core's balance; a difficult one needs strength or flexibility and does affect it. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- A crossfoot spin is skated on both feet with even weight, toes held close together and heels open. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- The shoulders start flat, then turn up to stand on end, then go further still. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- The sit groups follow the free leg: forward, then out to the side, then behind. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
- In B the free leg points away from the way the skater faces, behind. A holds it forward, C and D to the sides. (Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27)
