# Law 17: The Corner Kick (FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game)

Futsal · Law 17: The Corner Kick · Insporta Book (https://book.insporta.app/futsal/laws/law-17-the-corner-kick/)

Law 17 covers when a corner kick is awarded (whole ball over the end line after a defender's touch, no goal), where and how it is taken (corner area, stationary ball, four seconds, 5m from the corner arc, only the kicker off the pitch), why a goal may be scored directly against the opponents but not into the kicker's own goal, and every offence and sanction (second touch, kicking at an opponent, a team-mate off the pitch, and the goal clearance for other offences).

## 17.171 The Corner Kick

When a corner kick is awarded; where and how it is taken (corner area, stationary ball, four seconds, 5m from the corner arc, only the kicker off the pitch); why a goal may be scored directly against the opponents but an entry into the kicker's own goal gives a corner; the kicker's second touch and handling; and a team-mate off the pitch, the four-second offence and other offences that give a goal clearance.

### Test 1: When a corner kick is awarded

- Three conditions apply: the end line, a defender as the last toucher, and no goal. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The last touch by a defender is what gives the attackers the corner kick. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The Law names crossing the end line on the floor or in the air. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The goalkeeper counts as a defender for the purposes of this restart. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The corner kick applies only when a goal is not scored. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The last toucher decides which of the two restarts follows. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The whole ball has to be over the line, so a partial crossing does not count. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- Only the last touch chooses between the corner kick and the goal clearance. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The end line is for the corner kick, and the touchline belongs to the kick-in. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- Each distractor changes one condition, so all three must be right together. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))

### Test 2: The procedure: the corner area, the ball, four seconds, 5m

- The nearest corner area to the exit point is the one used. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The corner is kicked from rest, like other restarts. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The attackers take the corner, and any of their players may do so. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- Play starts as soon as the kick visibly moves the ball. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The Law states explicitly that the ball need not leave the corner area. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The four-second limit applies to the corner kick too. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The count depends on the team's readiness, either its own or as signalled by a referee. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The distance is five metres, measured from the corner arc. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- The kicker is the sole person allowed off the pitch, with the authorised-departure exception. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))
- Each distractor changes the ball, the place or the opponents' distance. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §1 (Procedure))

### Test 3: Goals from a corner kick

- A direct goal is allowed from a corner, though only into the opponents' goal. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- Unlike the kick-in and goal clearance, the corner may score directly. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- An entry into the kicker's own goal gives the other side a corner kick. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The direction of the entry decides between a goal and a corner for the other side. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- A direct goal is possible from the corner, but not from the kick-in. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The goal clearance is barred from scoring directly, whereas the corner is not. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The direct goal counts only in the opponents' goal. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- Whoever conceded by mistake hands the opponents the next corner. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- Both restarts treat an own-goal entry the same way, with a corner kick for the other side. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))
- The correct pairing counts the goal at their end and gives a corner for an own-goal entry. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 (When a Corner Kick Is Awarded))

### Test 4: The kicker's offences: second touch, handball, kicking at an opponent

- A second touch by the kicker gives the opponents an indirect free kick. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- Handling upgrades the offence from indirect to direct. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A handball inside the kicker's own area gives the opponents a penalty. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A goalkeeper as kicker is punished with an indirect free kick rather than a penalty. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A deliberate, non-careless kick at an opponent to replay the ball is accepted. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- The protection lasts only while the kick is not careless, reckless or forceful. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- The Law uses the same sanctions, so the two restarts match. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- Handling is the single feature that upgrades the offence to a direct kick. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A foot touch is indirect and a hand touch inside the area is a penalty. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- Both restarts share the same rule, with the goalkeeper as the exception. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))

### Test 5: Team-mate off the pitch, four seconds, and other offences

- The kicking side loses the corner, and the defenders restart with a goal clearance. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A caution needs the intent to deceive an opponent or gain a better position. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- The corner leads to a goal clearance, whereas the kick-in passes to the opponents. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- Overrunning the limit passes the ball to the defenders as a goal clearance. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A late corner loses the corner, whereas a late goal clearance is an indirect kick against the taker. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- Taking the corner from outside the corner area is a named offence. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- A second touch gives an indirect free kick, while the other three all give a goal clearance. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- The catch-all category explicitly covers timing and the place of the kick. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- Only the off-pitch team-mate offence carries a caution, and it depends on intent. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
- The two offences produce different restarts, so each distractor mixes them up. (Source: FIFA Futsal Laws of the Game 2025-26, Law 17 §2 (Offences and Sanctions))
