## Test 1: Age Groups and Race Age

- An athlete's age is their age on 31 December of the competition year, so the whole season is raced in one band. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Adult bands run in five-year steps: 20-24, 25-29, 30-34 and so on. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Standard and longer distances start at 18-19; sprint starts at 16-19 and super sprint at 15-19. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Race age is the age on 31 December, so an athlete turning 40 during the year races the whole season as 40-44. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Endurance performance declines with age, so comparing athletes against their own band is what makes an amateur result meaningful. (Source: General triathlon competition reference)
- Youth (15-17), Junior (16-19) and U23 (18-23) are elite-pathway categories; age-group bands are a separate amateur structure. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Once an athlete competes as an elite in a World Triathlon event, they cannot race age-group in the same multisport that calendar year. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Different bands may share a wave, but when one band is split, only athletes from that band go in the same wave. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 4.7)
- The calf carries category and gender, such as F25 for a woman in the 25-29 band. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.9)
- The rolling start, for long-distance and mass-participation races, is applicable only to age-group competitions. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 4.10)

## Test 2: World Triathlon Age-Group Championships

- At World Triathlon and continental events all entries are made by national federations, not by athletes directly. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- The rules point to the World Triathlon Qualification Criteria document, which federations apply when selecting athletes. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.5)
- Only age-group team managers and coaches registered on triathlon.org may attend; the technical delegate runs it. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.7)
- The agenda of that briefing includes the announcement of the competition jury and all the information needed for the event. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.7)
- Numbers go age group by age group, then by nation in IOC-code alphabetical order starting with the host nation. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.9)
- All age-group athletes must provide picture ID at registration or packet pick-up before the race. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.7)
- Age-group championship athletes race as national team members, in uniforms that follow World Triathlon's rules on authorised identification. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- The uniform is worn for the entire competition and the award ceremony, where long sleeves and trousers are allowed. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- Age-group races with over 700 entries schedule check-in the day before; smaller fields check in on the same day. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.7)
- Age-groupers serve this penalty in the transition area; everyone else serves it at the run penalty box. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.1)

## Test 3: Age-Group Kit Rules

- Age-groupers may wear sleeves ending above the elbow at any distance; elites must go sleeveless at standard distance and shorter. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- The uniform must cover the whole torso at the front; the back may be uncovered from the waist up. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- A front or back zip is allowed for age-groupers, up to 40 cm long. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- A front zip may be opened during the race, but must be zipped up for the last 200 m of the run. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- Two-piece suits must overlap with no torso showing, except in middle and long distance, where the midriff may show. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 2.8)
- Swimskins are allowed for age-groupers at all distances; elites may not wear them at standard distance and shorter. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 4.11)
- Swimskins must be removed after the swim segment. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 4.11)
- Younger bands lose the wetsuit from 22 °C up to 1500 m; from 60-64 up it is forbidden only from 24.6 °C at every distance. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 4.1)
- Age-group draft-legal racing allows only plugged drop handlebars and bans clip-ons; the front-wheel limit is the draft-illegal rule. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.2)
- Draft-legal age-group wheels must have at least 12 spokes and disc wheels are not allowed. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.2)

## Test 4: Ironman World Championship Slots

- Age-group winners get Automatic Qualifying Slots; they are the only athletes guaranteed an offer. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- A declined automatic slot rolls to second and then third place in the age group, and only then into the performance pool. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- Performance pool slots go to the next most competitive athletes by age-graded finish time. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- It takes the fastest 20% of World Championship finishers in each age group, over five years of data, as the benchmark. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- In the first races under the new system men took about 96% of pool slots while making up 84% of finishers. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- Each gender's pool now matches its share of eligible age-group starters at that race. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- The older system gave each age group slots in proportion to its number of starters, with at least one for any age group that had starters. (Source: General IRONMAN qualification reference (pre-2026 system))
- If a qualifier did not accept, the slot passed to the next finisher in the same age group. (Source: General IRONMAN qualification reference (pre-2026 system))
- The Legacy programme is for athletes with at least twelve full-distance Ironman finishes who have never started the World Championship. (Source: General IRONMAN qualification reference)
- Slot numbers followed field size, not depth, so the time needed to qualify varied widely between age groups. (Source: General IRONMAN qualification reference)

## Test 5: Age-Grading and Fair Comparison

- Age-grading adjusts a time against a benchmark for the athlete's age and gender, so different ages can be ranked together. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- Times are compared with a gender-specific benchmark for each age group and expressed relative to it, so athletes from different groups can be ranked against each other. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- 11:00 is 10% over a 10:00 benchmark; 12:36 is 5% over a 12:00 benchmark, so the older athlete ranks higher. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- The older athlete's benchmark is slower, so the same raw time is a stronger performance relative to it. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- A single winning time can be exceptional; the top fifth of the field gives a steadier picture of what each age can do. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- Several years of results even out an unusually hot or fast year and the small size of some older age groups. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- Benchmarks are gender-specific because typical championship times differ between men and women at every age. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- The oldest bands have few championship finishers, so their benchmark rests on little data and can be less reliable. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- A slot reaches the pool only after the winner, second and third decline it, so it points to lower uptake among women. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))
- The change was applied retroactively, with roughly 44 slots awarded to women from races already completed. (Source: IRONMAN announcement on 2026 World Championship age-group qualification (15 November 2025))

## Test 6: Drafting Rules in Age-Group Racing

- At standard distance and shorter the draft zone is 10 m, measured from the leading edge of the front wheel. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- Middle- and long-distance races use a 12 m draft zone. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- Up to 20 seconds is allowed at standard distance and shorter; the passing athlete must be seen to progress. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- The long-course allowance is 25 seconds to pass through another athlete's draft zone. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- The draft zone may be entered 100 m before and after aid stations and transition, at acute turns and for safety. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- An athlete is passed as soon as the other athlete's front wheel is ahead of theirs. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- The overtaken athlete must drop back out of the zone first; re-passing before that is a drafting violation. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.5)
- A second drafting offence means disqualification at standard distance or shorter; at middle and long distance it is the third. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.6)
- Long-course racing tolerates two drafting penalties; a third ends the race. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.6)
- Drafting violations cannot be appealed and are not a matter for protest. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 5.6)

- The official applying a time penalty is not required to give a reason for it. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 3.5)
- The athlete may skip it, but is then disqualified on finishing and may protest the penalty. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 3.5)
- The athlete stands still without touching equipment; if they touch it, the count is paused until they stop. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 3.5)

- They may protest both the disqualification and the head referee's decision to issue the penalty. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 3.9)
- The competition jury rules on whether the penalty was correct and upholds or dismisses the protest. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 3.9)
- Upholding the protest removes the time penalty and reverses the disqualification. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 3.9)
- Age-group protests are announced within 15 minutes of the later finish time, elites within 5 minutes. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 12.4)
- The written form follows within 30 minutes for age-groupers; elites have 15. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 12.4)
- Briefing decisions may be protested no later than two hours before the competition starts. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 12.4)
- A protest may be initiated by an athlete entered in the competition or an accredited national federation representative. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 12.3)
- Protestable matters include eligibility, start lists, equipment, conduct, officials' decisions and results errors. (Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (18 January 2025), 12.2)
