# Law 2: Net and Posts (FIVB Official Volleyball Rules)

Volleyball · Law 2: Net and Posts · Insporta Book (https://book.insporta.app/volleyball/laws/law-2-net-and-posts/)

The net over the centre line: its height for men and women and how that is measured, its size, mesh and bands; the side bands and antennae that bound the crossing space; and the posts that carry it.

## 2.21 Height and Structure of the Net

How high the net hangs, where that is measured and how much it may vary, and what the net, its mesh and its bands are made of.

### Test 1: Height and structure of the net

- The net hangs vertically over the centre line with its top at 2.43 metres for men and 2.24 metres for women. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.1.1)
- The reference height is taken in the middle of the court, and the two ends are checked against it. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.1.2)
- Above both side lines the net must stand at the same height, no more than 2 cm over the official 2.43 m. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.1.2)
- The net is one metre deep with a 3 cm tolerance and between 9.5 and 10 metres long. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2)
- The net is a black mesh of 10 cm squares; at the top level it may be altered for advertising under the competition's agreements. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2)
- A folded white canvas band 7 cm deep runs the whole length of the top edge. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2)
- A cord through each end hole fastens the band to the posts and keeps the top taut; a cable inside the band does the same. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2)
- C is the 5 cm bottom band; its rope ties the lower edge to the posts. A is a side band, B the mesh and D the top band. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2)
- The top band is 7 cm, a mesh square 10 cm, the net 1 m deep and 9.5-10 m long. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2)
- Women play under 2.24 m, men under 2.43 m, and the posts stand 2.55 m tall. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.1.1, 2.5.1)

## 2.22 Side Bands, Antennae and Posts

The side bands and antennae at the ends of the net, and where and how the posts stand.

### Test 1: Side bands, antennae and posts

- The white side bands hang vertically on the net directly over the side lines and count as part of the net. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.3)
- A side band is a white strip five centimetres wide and one metre long, the depth of the net. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.3)
- Each antenna is a flexible rod of fibreglass or a similar material, 1.80 m long and 10 mm in diameter. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.4)
- One antenna goes on the outer edge of each side band, and the two are fixed on opposite faces of the net. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.4)
- The upper 80 cm stands above the net in 10 cm bands of contrasting colour, red and white by preference. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.4)
- At the top level the posts are exactly one metre out from the side lines and carry padding. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.5.1)
- Posts are rounded and smooth and fixed to the ground with no wires, so nothing dangerous or obstructing is left near play. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.5.2)
- The antennae and their imaginary extensions bound the crossing space at the sides, so only C, between them and above the net, is inside it. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.4)
- The side band is over the line, the antenna on its outer edge, the mesh runs 25-50 cm beyond, and the post stands 1 m out. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5.1)
- A side band is 1 m long, an antenna 1.80 m, and a post 2.55 m high. (Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 2.3, 2.4, 2.5.1)
