Chapter 3: Tournaments
10 parts · 10 tests · 100 facts · updated 29 October 2026 · markdown
Beyond the All England, badminton has a long list of multi-sport and stand-alone tournaments. It joined the Commonwealth Games at Kingston in 1966, the eighth edition of the Games, where each country could send four men and four women, and England and Malaysia won all five golds. At Birmingham 2022 India took three golds, but badminton was among the sports left out of Glasgow 2026 after the original host, Victoria in Australia, withdrew over the cost.
At the Asian Games badminton became a full sport in Jakarta in 1962, when Indonesia won five of the six titles. The European Championships began in Bochum in 1968, then in West Germany, and Danish players have won far more titles than any other nation. Kevin Cordón of Guatemala, playing at his fourth Olympic Games, reached the last four in Tokyo as world number 59 and finished fourth after losing the bronze medal match to Anthony Ginting; no player from Latin America had gone so far. The Uber Cup, the women's world team championship, was first played in 1956-57 for a trophy Betty Uber helped design.
The facts below cover the Commonwealth Games from 1966 to 2022, the early Asian Games, the European and Pan American championships, Kevin Cordón, the Thomas and Uber Cup trophies, Olympic upsets, the Indonesia Open and the World Senior Championships.
