Level 3 leaves the rulebook behind and works the craft of the game: batting craft, from stance and trigger to the front- and back-foot shots, playing spin against pace, leaving, running a partnership and the sweep family; pace bowling, swing against seam, the wobble ball, the yorker and the bouncer, reverse swing and what it needs, lines and lengths and the field for each; spin bowling, off spin and leg spin, the wrong'un and the carrom ball, flight against drift, bowling to a left-hander and using the rough; fielding, catching and keeping, the named positions and why they are placed there, slip catching, the outfield throw, standing up against standing back and run-out angles; and captaincy and match situations, reading the pitch, when to take the new ball, setting a field to a plan, chasing against defending, the tail and closing out a Twenty20.

Sub-levels

Written from

ESPNcricinfo and its coaching glossary for technique and tactics; recognised cricket coaching material for stroke play, bowling actions and field settings; general cricket knowledge for match situations. Level 3 is skills and judgement, not the Laws, so the MCC code is cited only where a Law underpins a tactical point. Questions are authored from these sources, not reproduced from them.
