Professional

5 sub-levels · 25 tests · 250 facts · updated 12 October 2026

Level 10 is the landscape a professional cricketer actually lives in today, in detail. The ICC world events: the men's ODI World Cup edition by edition, the T20 World Cup from 2007, the Champions Trophy, and the World Test Championship with its two-year cycle and finals, with the hosts, winners and tournament records. The franchise circuit: the Indian Premier League and its auction, the Big Bash League, the Pakistan Super League, SA20, the ILT20, The Hundred, the Caribbean Premier League and Major League Cricket, and how the league windows fit the international calendar, salary caps and player retention. Domestic first-class cricket: the County Championship, the Sheffield Shield, the Ranji Trophy, the Plunket Shield and their peers, first-class cricket as the feeder to the Test side, and the place of List A and domestic T20. The professional's career: central contracts against franchise free agency, the draft and the auction, workload management and rotation, agents and the transfer market, the players' associations and FICA, and retirement into coaching or commentary. The women's game and the record book: the Women's ODI and T20 World Cups, the WPL and the WBBL, the professionalisation of the women's game in the 2020s, the leading players, and the all-time men's and women's record book. The axis is the professional game as it stands now, not the older history of the game (Level 9), the canon of players and matches (Level 7) or how the sport is governed (Level 6).

Sub-levels

Written from

ICC and member-board material, ESPNcricinfo, the Wisden Almanack and the league and competition handbooks for the dates, hosts, winners, figures and structures. This is the competitive game as it stands now: a question about a current tournament, a franchise league, a domestic competition, a contract system or a standing record is in scope, a question about how the modern game came to be belongs to Level 9 and a question about who runs the game belongs to Level 6. Every question carries a specific source. Questions are authored from these sources, not reproduced from them.
