Olympic Badminton

10 tests · 100 facts · updated 29 October 2026 · markdown

Olympic badminton has five events, men's and women's singles and men's, women's and mixed doubles, and no team event. Each awards gold, silver and bronze, so 15 medals are given at every Games; mixed doubles joined in 1996, four years after the others. Players qualify mainly through the world ranking over a qualifying period, with continental places so that every continent is represented and usually a place for the host. A country can send at most two singles players or two pairs per event, and only when both rank near the top.

Since London 2012 each event starts with a group stage, so every player has more than one match; that year, pairs who tried to lose for an easier draw were disqualified. Knock-out rounds follow, the semi-final winners play for gold, and the two semi-final losers meet in a bronze medal match, so there is one bronze per event. China has won the most golds. Denmark has won men's singles gold, Spain's Carolina Marín won the women's singles in 2016, and Lin Dan and Viktor Axelsen have each won the men's singles twice. Olympic gold brings 14,500 ranking points, the Grade 1 level it shares with the World Championships. Los Angeles hosts in 2028, under the 2027 Laws with games to 15, and Brisbane in 2032.

The facts below cover the events, qualification, the format, the medal table, venues from Barcelona to Paris and the next Games.

Questions people ask

How many badminton events are there at the Olympics?
Five: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. There is no team event, and each event awards gold, silver and bronze, 15 medals in all.
How do badminton players qualify for the Olympics?
Mainly through the world ranking at the end of a qualifying period, built from BWF-sanctioned tournaments. Continental places and a host place make sure the field is spread more widely.
How many players can one country send to Olympic badminton?
At most two in a singles event and two pairs in a doubles event, and only if both rank near the top. The cap gives more nations a chance.
Is there a group stage in Olympic badminton?
Yes, since London 2012 each event begins with groups, followed by knock-out rounds. A player who loses a group match is not necessarily out, because all the group results count.
How is bronze decided in Olympic badminton?
The two semi-final losers play a bronze medal match, so only one bronze is given in each event. The loser of that match finishes fourth, without a medal.
Which country has won the most Olympic badminton gold?
China leads the medal table by far. Apart from the Asian powers, only Denmark and Spain have won badminton gold, while Malaysia has silvers and bronzes but no gold.
Who has won Olympic men's singles badminton twice?
Lin Dan and Viktor Axelsen have each won the Olympic men's singles title twice.
Where are the next Olympic badminton events?
Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Games, with para badminton at the Paralympics too, and Brisbane, Australia, hosts in 2032. Los Angeles will be played under the 2027 Laws, with games to 15.
