Mixed Doubles

10 tests · 100 facts · updated 29 October 2026 · markdown

Mixed doubles joined the Olympic programme in 1996. Its classic attacking shape puts the woman at the net and the man at the back: she controls the front and sets up the attack, he smashes and covers the rear court. Pairs serve short and tight, avoid lifting because the man on the other side will smash, and use the flick serve against receivers who lean forward. Returns pushed past the front player into the midcourt gap trouble even top pairs, and opponents try to pull the woman to the back to break the formation. Modern pairs rotate more and share roles more freely.

South Korea's Kim Dong-moon and Gil Young-ah won the first Olympic title. China's Zhang Jun and Gao Ling won in 2000 and 2004, the only pair to win twice. Lee Yong-dae and Lee Hyo-jung won in 2008, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei in 2012, and Indonesia's Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir in 2016; Natsir won four world titles with two partners. Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping won an all-Chinese Tokyo final against Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, who took gold in Paris 2024 after three world titles.

The facts below cover tactics, the Olympic and world champions, European pairs from Britain, Denmark and France, Japan's first mixed medals in 2021 and 2024, and the newer champions from Thailand, Korea and Malaysia.
