Planning a Season

10 tests · 100 facts · updated 28 October 2026 · markdown

A club season runs in a yearly cycle: preparation, an in-season focus and recovery time. Planning in blocks, from the long view down to the short, lets a coach plan for the peaks and adapt as the season goes.

Team goals give shared direction. Good goals focus on what the team can control and on process over outcome, are owned by the players, and are checked and adjusted with honesty. Pre-season is time to learn, rebuild basics, integrate new players, build team spirit and set individual aims, with a preparation match as a dress rehearsal. Selection should be transparent, with fair criteria, picking on form and honest feedback; coaches select. Squad depth covers losses, shares minutes and keeps ready replacements, versatility helps, and a squad board and a pathway between teams keep everyone engaged. Individual development plans are personal, shared and measurable, with a mid-season check. Each week brings a cycle of play, review, plan and train, using evidence and player insight. Behind the team is a coaching team with clear roles in a volunteer-led club, where volunteers are valued. Families need clear expectations through one channel, often starting with a parents' meeting.

The facts below cover season phases, goals, pre-season, selection, depth and rotation, development plans, learning from matches, the coaching team, communication and the end-of-season review.

Each test below is ten questions on Insporta. The list under a test is what the questions check: one fact per question, with the source it was written from. Read it before the test, or come back from a wrong answer.
