The instant review system lets players challenge line calls and umpire overrules, under BWF Statutes 4.1.8, Instant Review System (V2.1, 2023). A player raises a hand straight away to challenge, the review produces a replay graphic, and the referee tells the umpire how to resume. If the call is reversed, no challenge is lost; a failed challenge counts, and challenges are unlimited within a game until two have failed. The system is usually on TV courts, where accuracy on close calls matters most.
Under the BWF Laws of Badminton 2027, the serve is judged by a fixed-height rule, one height for all, which makes the call objective. The service judge sits low by the net, and at top events a see-through screen with a mark helps. Off court, shuttle machines give volume of practice with automatic feeding but no decisions, while stringing machines string mains then crosses with a constant, accurate pull. Racket sensors give swing data and wearables give body data such as training load; both are helpful, not essential, and their numbers are partial.
The facts below cover the review system and challenges, service height checks, machines, sensors and wearables, data on screen from tracking technology, broadcasting and streaming, training apps, and why tools support people rather than replace real play.
Each test below is ten questions on Insporta. The list under a test is what the questions check: one fact per question, with the source it was written from. Read it before the test, or come back from a wrong answer.

Questions people ask
- How does the instant review system work in badminton?
- It reviews line calls and umpire overrules on the courts where it is installed, usually TV courts. The process runs call, challenge, review, decision, with the result shown in a replay graphic.
- How many challenges does a badminton player get?
- Challenges are unlimited in a game until two have failed. A successful challenge reverses the call and no challenge is lost.
- How does a player challenge a line call?
- By raising a hand straight away after the call. The limit on failed challenges applies per game.
- How is the service height checked in badminton?
- A fixed-height service rule applies one height to all players, judged by the service judge sitting low by the net. At top events a see-through screen with a mark helps.
- Are shuttle feeding machines good for training?
- They give a large volume of repetition with automatic feeding, but they make no decisions. Real play remains the most realistic way to build reading of the game.
- Do badminton players need sensors or wearables?
- They are helpful but not essential. Swing and body data, such as training load, give partial numbers that are best read with a coach.
- Where is badminton watched the most?
- Badminton is most watched in Asia, with global reach through broadcast and streaming. Simple streams are possible too.
- Can technology replace coaching in badminton?
- No: tools support people, and real play builds reading. Technology is optional, and its use should start from a clear purpose.
