Chapter 4: Clubs & Venues

10 parts · 10 tests · 100 facts · updated 29 October 2026 · markdown

Some of badminton's best-known halls were built for one big event and then became the sport's home for decades. Istora Senayan in Jakarta, full name Istora Gelora Bung Karno, was begun in 1960, served the 1962 Asian Games and reopened in January 2018 after a refit of about 132 billion rupiah, with single seats in place of about 10,000 wooden places. Stadium Negara, Malaysia's first indoor stadium, opened on 10 April 1962 and saw Malaysia beat Indonesia in the Thomas Cup final of 1992, its first win since 1967.

Kuala Lumpur's arena at Bukit Jalil took three names in nine years, becoming Axiata Arena in 2017 and Unifi Arena in 2026. Birmingham's National Indoor Arena, still called the NIA by locals, was the largest indoor arena in the UK when it opened, and the All England moved there. England's National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes has eight courts, 25 twin bedrooms for players and the Badminton Museum. Further afield, Musashino Forest Sport Plaza in Chofu, western Tokyo, opened on 25 November 2017, and PB Djarum began in 1969 among workers at a cigarette factory in Kudus.

The facts below cover these halls and Copenhagen's arenas, the clubs and coaches behind China's first team in Fujian, and the venues where Olympic badminton has been played, from Barcelona to Rio.
