Law 1: Field of Play

2 parts · 2 tests · 20 facts · updated 30 October 2026 · markdown

Law 1 of the FIH Rules 2027 describes the field of play: its size, its lines, the areas marked on it and the equipment around it. The field is a rectangle 91.40 metres long and 55.00 metres wide. Side-lines mark the longer perimeters and back-lines the shorter ones, and only the stretch of back-line between the two goal-posts is the goal-line. All lines are 75 mm wide and every line belongs to the field of play, so a ball on the side-line is still in.

The centre-line runs across the field halfway between the back-lines, 45.70 m from each. The 23-metres line is marked 22.90 m from the back-line, and that area, lines included, is the 23-metres area. The circle is the smaller area in front of the goal, enclosed by and including the circle-lines, so a ball on the circle-line is inside the circle. Its edge is 14.63 m out. Each penalty spot is centred 6.40 m from the inner edge of the goal-line.

The goals stand outside the field at the centre of each back-line, and no items may be placed inside them. Corner flag-posts are between 1.20 and 1.50 metres high; competition Regulations may make them compulsory, for example where a match is televised. A bench for each team stands outside the field along the same side.

The facts below cover the field and its lines, then the circles, penalty spots, goals, flag-posts and team benches.
