Chapter 10: Other Forms of the Game

10 parts · 10 tests · 100 facts · updated 31 October 2026 · markdown

Chapter 10 covers the relatives and offshoots of field hockey: shinty, camogie, bandy, floorball, rink hockey, underwater hockey, unicycle hockey, indoor hockey and Hockey5s. Some are older than the modern game, and some are played in places no one would expect.

Shinty's Camanachd Cup is a silver cup that has been passed around among winners and filled with whisky. Camogie, the Irish women's stick game, has run an All-Ireland since 1932 and belongs to the GAA family, close to hurling. Bury Fen Bandy Club, on the frozen Fens of Cambridgeshire near the village of Bluntisham, wrote rules for hockey on ice, and C.G. Tebbutt wrote a handbook of bandy. Floorball is called innebandy in Sweden, meaning 'indoor bandy', and uses plastic sticks of about a metre in length.

Rink hockey on roller skates has a Nations Cup held since 1921, with gaps, and it is the oldest international tournament in the sport. Underwater hockey, originally called Octopush, is played with snorkels, and the goal is a metal trough three metres wide. Unicycle hockey has players from their early teens to their 60s. A German tennis and hockey club in Wiesbaden wrote the first indoor rules, and Hockey5s first appeared at the Youth Games in Nanjing.

The facts below cover the Camanachd Cup, shinty's great finals, camogie, Bury Fen's bandy, floorball, rink hockey, underwater hockey, unicycle hockey, indoor hockey and Hockey5s.
