Counting Revolutions

2 tests · 20 facts · updated 20 October 2026 · markdown

From singles to quads, jump codes and reading the calls on a score sheet.

Each test below is ten questions on Insporta. The list under a test is what the questions check: one fact per question, with the source it was written from. Read it before the test, or come back from a wrong answer.

Test 1Singles to quadsTake a test

  1. Jumps are named by their turns: one for a single, two a double, three a triple, four a quadruple; the Axel adds half.

  2. A quadruple is four revolutions; only the Axel adds a half.

  3. The figure before the letters is the number of revolutions: 3Lz is a triple Lutz.

  4. 4F is a quadruple flip: the number counts the turns, the letter names the jump.

  5. Lo is the loop; its neighbour Lz is the Lutz, a toe jump, while the toe loop is a plain T.

  6. With the Axel's extra half, a double Axel is two and a half revolutions.

Source: ISU, Figure skating jumps explained (isu-skating.com, 2026) · recall

  7. A jump skated with two clean revolutions is a double; downgrades are for jumps short of their own turns.

  8. Count the turns: 2, then 2.5, then 3, then 3.5.

  9. The waltz jump comes at Level III, the toe loop at Level IV, the flip at Level V and the single Axel at Level VI.

  10. C reads 4Lz, a four-turn Lutz. 3Lz has one turn fewer, 4Lo is a loop and 4F a flip.

Test 2Reading jump callsTake a test

  1. The plus joins jumps skated together, read left to right; Lo is the loop, not the Lutz.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · recall

  2. The single sign < marks an under-rotated jump: more than a quarter, less than half a turn missing.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · recall

  3. The double sign << marks a downgraded jump, half a turn or more short.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · recall

  4. The small letter after Lz flags the edge: the skater came off an inside edge instead of the outside one.

  5. The q after the code means the jump landed a quarter of a turn short.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · recall

  6. The exclamation mark is a warning only; the flip keeps its full value though the judges may cut its grade.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · recall

  7. Edge calls apply to the two toe jumps defined by their take-off edge: the flip (inside) and the Lutz (outside).

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · recall

  8. Clean comes first; q is a quarter short, < under-rotated, << downgraded.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · applied

  9. The code reads double Lutz, then double toe loop: number, jump, plus, number, jump.

Source: ISU Technical Panel Handbook, Single Skating 2026/27 · applied

  10. Only B lacks exactly one quarter of its last turn. A is complete, C is short by over half, D by about a third.
