Law 36: Leg Before Wicket

3 parts · 15 tests · 150 facts · updated 12 October 2026 · markdown

Law 36 sets out the five circumstances that must all apply for the striker to be out LBW (a ball not being a No ball, pitching in line or on the off side unless intercepted full-pitch, interception by his person without a prior bat touch, the point of impact between wicket and wicket or outside the off stump if no genuine attempt to play, and the ball would have hit the wicket), how the interception is assessed, and how the off side is determined.

The five circumstances that must all apply for LBW, and the first three: a ball not being a No ball, pitching in line or on the off side if not intercepted full-pitch, and interception by any part of the striker's person after the ball has not touched his bat.
