Law 14: The Follow-On

2 parts · 10 tests · 100 facts · updated 12 October 2026 · markdown

Law 14 gives the side batting first the option of requiring the other side to follow on when it leads by the minimum (200 runs in matches of 5 days or more, 150 in 3 or 4 days, 100 in 2 days, 75 in 1 day), requires the opposing captain and the umpires to be notified (a decision that cannot then be changed), and counts the days remaining when the first day's play is lost.

14.141The Follow-On: Leads, Notification and a Lost First Day

The minimum lead by length of match (200, 150, 100, 75 runs), who has the option, notifying the opposing captain and the umpires, counting days when the first day is lost, and the order of innings.
