Law 12: Interference, Obstruction and Collisions
3 parts · 5 tests · 50 facts · updated 27 October 2026 · markdown
Law 12 of the WBSC Official Rules of Baseball 2025-2026 deals with the moments when someone gets in the way of play. Interference is usually an act by the team at bat: hindering a fielder's catch, deliberately deflecting a foul ball, gathering round a base, or a base coach holding a runner. Typically the ball is dead and the batter or runner is out, and other runners go back to the bases they held at the time of the pitch. A runner who deliberately breaks up a double play is out together with the batter-runner. The batting team must also vacate any space a fielder needs, dugouts and bullpens included.
Interference can also come from spectators, who make the ball dead at once, and from umpires. Obstruction is the defence's offence: a fielder who is neither holding nor fielding the ball and impedes a runner. The obstructed runner is awarded at least one base beyond the last one he legally touched, and the umpire may give more. Under WBSC rules a runner cannot be visually obstructed. The collision rule targets unnecessary and violent contact, mainly with the catcher at home; contact above the waist is judged as an attempt to dislodge the ball, and a malicious collision gets the runner ejected.
The facts below cover interference by the batting team and by others, obstruction, and how collisions are judged.

Questions people ask
- What is the difference between interference and obstruction in baseball?
- Interference is mostly an act by the team at bat that hinders a fielder or a play. Obstruction is the act of a fielder who, without the ball and not fielding it, impedes a runner's progress.
- What happens when a runner interferes to break up a double play?
- The ball is dead and both the runner and the batter-runner are out.
- What happens if a fan reaches over and touches a ball in play?
- That is spectator interference: the ball is dead at once and the umpire imposes penalties to nullify the act. If it clearly prevented a catch, the batter is out.
- How many bases does an obstructed runner get?
- At least one base beyond the base he last touched legally, and the umpire may award more.
- Can a fielder block a runner's view and be called for obstruction?
- No. Under the WBSC rules a runner cannot be visually obstructed by a fielder.
- When is a runner out for a collision at home plate?
- When he tries to dislodge the ball from the fielder, and contact above the waist is judged as such an attempt. He is out even if the ball comes loose, the ball is dead and other runners return.
- What happens to a runner who causes a malicious collision?
- He is ejected from the game. If he was safe, he is still ruled safe.
- Does a ball that passes an infielder and hits the runner behind him make the runner out?
- No. A ball that goes through or by an infielder and touches a runner immediately behind him does not make that runner out.
