13.131What an Attack Hit Is

The definition and completion of an attack hit, tipping, and where front-row and back-row players may attack from.

Test 1What an attack hit is and who may make itTake a test

  1. Any action directing the ball towards the opponents is an attack hit, apart from the service and the block.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.1.1 · recall

  2. A tip is legal provided the ball is cleanly hit rather than caught or thrown.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.1.2 · recall

  3. Completion comes when the ball has completely crossed the vertical plane of the net or is touched by an opponent.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.1.3 · recall

  4. Front-row players may attack at any height provided the contact is within their own playing space.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.2.1 · recall

  5. At take-off the back-row player's feet must neither touch nor cross the attack line.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.2.2 · recall

  6. Having hit legally, the back-row player is allowed to land within the front zone.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.2.2.2 · recall

  7. Any ball moving towards the opponents is an attack hit, so with no team-mate able to play it the block is legal.

  9. The attack hit is only completed once the ball has crossed the net or an opponent has touched it.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.1.3 · recall

  10. The front zone lies between the centre line and the attack line; a back-row attacker takes off behind that line.

13.132Attack-Hit Faults

Back-row attacks in the front zone, attacking the service, the Libero's attacks and sets, with Casebook situations.

Test 1Attack-hit faultsTake a test

    Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.2.3, 13.3.3 · recall

  2. If part of the ball is lower than the top of the net at contact, the attack from the front zone is legal.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.2.3 · applied

  3. Completing an attack hit on the opponent's service in the front zone, with the ball wholly above the net, is a fault for any player.

    Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.2.4, 13.3.4 · recall

  4. The ban covers serves attacked in the front zone; a contact made behind the attack line is legal.

    Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 13.3.4; Casebook 2024 3.35 · applied

  5. A Libero's attack hit is a fault only when the ball is entirely higher than the top of the net at contact.

  6. An attack completed from higher than the net on a Libero's overhand finger pass in the front zone is a fault.
