Law 8: States of Play

2 parts · 2 tests · 20 facts · updated 24 October 2026 · markdown

When the ball comes into play and goes out of play, when a ball is in, and the ways it becomes out: landing outside, outside objects and the ceiling, the net system outside the side bands, the crossing space and the lower space.

8.81In Play, Out of Play and Ball In

The authorised service hit, the whistle that ends play, and when a ball touching the court or lines is in.

Test 1In play, out of play and ball inTake a test

  1. The ball comes into play at the authorised service hit, not at the whistle or the toss.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.1 · recall

  2. The ball is out of play at the moment of the fault a referee whistles; with no fault, at the moment of the whistle.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.2 · recall

  3. If at any moment of its floor contact some part of the ball touches the court, boundary lines included, it is in.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.3 · recall

  4. Any part of the ball on the line is enough, since the boundary lines belong to the court.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.3 · applied

  5. Without a fault, the whistle itself ends the ball's time in play.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.2 · applied

  6. Under the 2025-2028 text the ceiling is like any object outside the court: touching it makes the ball out.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.2 · recall

  7. What counts is any moment of the ball's contact with the floor; if part of it reaches the line, it is in.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.3 · applied

  8. Only C touches the line; the others land completely outside it, B only just.

    Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.3, 8.4.1 · applied

  9. The authorised service hit starts play; the whistled fault ends it.

    Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.1, 8.2 · recall

  10. Inside the court and on the line are both in; completely outside the line is out.

8.82When the Ball Is Out

Landing outside, touching people and objects out of play, the antennae, posts and net outside the side bands, and the spaces under and beside the net.

Test 1When the ball is outTake a test

  1. Touching a person out of play makes the ball out.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.2 · applied

  2. The ball is out if it touches the antennae, ropes, posts, or the net itself outside the side bands.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.3 · recall

  3. The side bands mark the end of the playable net; a touch beyond them ends the rally.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.3 · applied

  4. Crossing the net's plane partly or wholly outside the crossing space is out, apart from the play-back case of Rule 10.1.2.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.4 · recall

  5. A ball that crosses the lower space completely is out.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.5 · recall

  6. Going partly under the net and coming back does not make it out; the ball stays playable.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.5 · applied

  7. The ball is out when all the parts of it in contact with the floor are completely outside the boundary lines.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.1 · recall

  8. B goes into the net between the side bands and stays in play; A hits an antenna, C a post and D the net outside a side band.

Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.4.3 · applied

  9. Touching the antenna makes the ball out; it is out of play at the whistled fault, and the opponents score.

    Source: FIVB OVR 2025-2028, Rule 8.2, 8.4.3 · applied

  10. The lower space is under the net, and the crossing space lies above its top band between the antennae.
