Test 2Equipment and the binTake a test
Everything to be used at a later stage must be within 0.5 m of the bin.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (i) (Transition Area) · recall
Without a bin, the 0.5 m is measured from the point on the ground immediately below the rack number or name plate.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (i) (Transition Area) · recall
Only equipment to be used in the competition may stay; everything else is removed before the start.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (ii) (Transition Area) · recall
At the last transition everything goes in the bin, used or not; bike shoes on the pedals and bike items placed on the bike in T1 are the exceptions.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (iii) (Transition Area) · recall
Bike shoes may stay fixed on the pedals. Other bike equipment placed on the bike in T1 may stay too, but not the helmet or glasses.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (iii) (Transition Area) · recall
For earlier transitions only used equipment must be binned; with repeating segments this means used items that will not be needed again.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (iv) (Transition Area) · applied
An item counts as deposited in the bin once one part of it is inside.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 b (v) (Transition Area) · applied
In duathlon the same shoes for the second run need not go in the bin at T1; they may wait on the floor within 0.5 m of the athlete's bin.

Non-race belongings go before the start; at an earlier transition only used kit must be binned; by the end of the last transition all kit must be.

Kit for later use must be within 0.5 m of the bin (the shaded ring). Only C lies outside it.

Test 3Mount and dismount linesTake a test
Cycling is not permitted inside the transition area except during the cycling segment itself.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 g (Transition Area) · recall
The rules state that the mount and dismount lines are part of the transition area.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 g (Transition Area) · recall
Athletes mount after the mount line, with one complete foot contact with the ground beyond it.
Source: World Triathlon Competition Rules (January 2025), 7.1 h (Transition Area) · recall
The dismount needs one complete foot contact with the ground before the dismount line; a foot touching the line is not wholly before it.
