Kapitel 5 verfolgt die Ausrüstung des Feldhockeys und die Beläge, auf denen es gespielt wird. Schläger begannen als Hickory und Esche, gekocht, getrocknet, geleimt und auf einer Maschine gebogen, und endeten als steife Karbonwerkzeuge. Der Kopf ist der Teil, der vom Ball die meiste Belastung erfährt, und Hersteller versuchten, ein Netz über seine Vorderseite zu kleben, um Risse zu verhindern. In Jalandhar fand ein Schlägerbauer einen anderen Kniff, denn gerissene Holzschläger ließen sich nicht reparieren und wurden zu Brennstoff.

Das Geschäft hinter der Ausrüstung ist alt. Grays of Cambridge ist die älteste Hockeymarke der Welt, stellt seit mehr als 150 Jahren Sportgeräte her und begann mit Rackets. Kookaburra, ein Familienunternehmen aus Melbourne, gegründet von A.G. Thompson, entwarf seinen Ball 1982, den ersten wasserdichten Hockeyball der Firma. Sialkot und Jalandhar, eine kurze Fahrt und eine internationale Grenze voneinander entfernt, stellen einen großen Teil der Ausrüstung des Spiels her.

Die Beläge veränderten den Sport noch stärker. Das erste olympische Spiel auf Kunstrasen wurde an einem Vormittag im Juli 1976 in Montreal gespielt, und das bewässerte Spielfeld entstand zufällig. London brachte blauen Kunstrasen, Tokio und Paris hatten Poligras-Kunstrasen, und der 50. Jahrestag des Wandels wurde am 18. Juli 2026 als Hockey Turf Day begangen.
