Le chapitre 5 retrace l'équipement du hockey sur gazon et les surfaces sur lesquelles il se joue. Les crosses ont commencé en hickory et en frêne, bouillies, séchées, collées et cintrées à la machine, et ont fini en outils rigides en carbone. La tête est la partie qui subit le plus de coups de la balle, et les fabricants ont essayé de coller un filet sur l'avant pour éviter les fissures. À Jalandhar, un fabricant de crosses a trouvé une autre astuce, car les crosses en bois fissurées ne pouvaient pas être réparées et finissaient en combustible.
Le commerce de l'équipement est ancien. Grays of Cambridge est la plus ancienne marque de hockey du monde, fabrique du matériel de sport depuis plus de 150 ans et a commencé avec des raquettes. Kookaburra, une entreprise familiale de Melbourne fondée par A.G. Thompson, a conçu sa balle en 1982, la première balle de hockey étanche de la firme. Sialkot et Jalandhar, distantes d'un court trajet en voiture et d'une frontière internationale, fabriquent une grande partie du matériel du jeu.
Les surfaces ont changé le sport plus encore. Le premier match olympique sur gazon synthétique a été joué un matin de juillet 1976 à Montréal, et le terrain arrosé est né par accident. Londres a apporté la surface bleue, Tokyo et Paris la surface Poligras, et le 50e anniversaire du changement a été marqué par la Hockey Turf Day le 18 juillet 2026.

- En bois, notamment le hickory et le frêne. Elles étaient bouillies, séchées, collées et cintrées à la machine, et le manche venait en dernier, après le sciage et le polissage.
